My name is Matt Robson and I am currently working at The International School of Prague in The Czech Republic. I have two sons, one at university in England and another who will complete his I.B studies in June 2012. I am married to Christine, who is the I.B Art teacher at I.S.P.
My experience in the classroom is with students between the ages of seven and fourteen years old. On the sports field I have taught physical education and coached students between the ages of eight and nineteen.

My teaching passions are wide ranging, but I prefer the Middle School age range. My experience lies in the areas of language arts and social studies (humanities) and sports teaching and coaching.


PERSONAL STATEMENT

I came into teaching because I wanted to work with young people, because of their energy and open minds. Every student I have met is an individual with their own needs, their own special talents and their own dreams. I wanted to become part of their story, to help them overcome challenges, develop their talents and interests and help them work towards their full potential.

One thing I have always believed in is the power of a positive classroom, where students feel safe, see the sense in what they are doing and are motivated by learning activity. It is very important to me to create an enabling learning environment, to make it a place in which students will be comfortable to contribute and not be afraid of making mistakes. It must be a place where they feel motivated and stimulated by inquiry based projects and authentic assessments that will make their learning endure the test of time. They should also understand why they are undertaking tasks, be clear about their aims and be in charge of their own goal-making process through reflective self-assessment. Students should be able to ask questions, be openly curious and go on improving their knowledge, skills and attitudes. The classroom should be a place where the teacher is trusted and becomes a partner in learning.

I have a wide range of teaching experiences that have included working with the English National Curriculum, PYP and MYP programmes. I have a lot of experience working alongside students to develop reading and writing skills in language arts and extending their knowledge of the world, both past and present in social studies. My present department has been at the forefront of authentic, inquiry based units and integration. During the last five years, I have taken an active part in the development of a Middle School one-to-one laptop program. Using my own creative interests in art and photography, I developed an art curriculum at The International School of Tanganyika. I teach physical skills and develop team spirit, performance and tactics in sports coaching and in leading physical education lessons. Finally, being Head of Pastoral Care, a Grade Team Leader and a year group Advisor, I enjoy working with individual students, parents and teachers to overcome hurdles to learning, create achievable goals, encourage positive outcomes and reward success.

In my career I have been very fortunate, because I have followed my own interests and motivations and I have tried to pass that energy on to my students. At present I am renewing my coaching qualifications, so I can keep informed about the developments in this area and further  develop my sports teaching skills. I am also interested in making my classroom a more student-centred learning environment and have targeted my recent professional development in this area. It is important for me to continue being a student as well as a teacher, so I can see things from both points of view and continue to learn and develop.

All of us can achieve an endless amount if we are motivated and feel comfortable to develop our skills step by step, without any fear of failure. My daily contacts with students, fellow teachers and parents must create conditions to ensure that all students have a chance to succeed and see the steps of learning as clear and achievable, enjoyable and worthwhile.
